Tight finish in the race for playoff qualification

By | March 3, 2018

Tonight, all eight games in the JPL kick off at the same time: 20.00. Four teams – Club Brugge, Charleroi, Anderlecht and Gent – have confirmed their places but the remaining two positions are up for grabs.

Kortrijk had a great chance to move into pole position last week but lost by a late goal in the local derby with Zulte Waregem. Although there are eight teams with mathematical chances of being promoted, it looks like it will be two from a group of Racing Genk, Kortrijk and Standard Liege.

The teams showing the best form are Racing Genk and Standard, but I have a feeling that Kortrijk might just take a point at the Jan Breydel stadium tonight and that should allow them a playoffs place – assuming they best Charleroi next week – along with Racing Genk. What is clear is that the tension will still be there on the last day of the classic season.

As for relegation, it will be one of KV Mechelen, Eupen and Lokeren. They will be replaced by either Cercle Brugge or Beerschot Wilrijk (ex Germinal Beerschot).
