Ticket to Rio available – only Anderlecht right backs need apply

Anthony Vanden Borre was once rated, along with Vincent Kompany, as one of the Anderlecht academy’s success stories. Then it all went wrong and his career seemed to be over. Last season, though, he returned to the Brussels club but hardly featured in the first team.

He had quite a bit of competition in the last campaign but now Marcin Wasilewski is out of contract and Dennis Odoi has been dispatched to Lokeren.

That leaves Guillaume Gillet and Vanden Borre to fight for the right back spot. In the past, Anderlecht coach John Van den Brom has said he prefers Gillet in midfield but there’s competition there and he’d find it tough to get a regular game.

Marc Wilmots has Ajax’s Toby Alderweireld at right back in the national team with Gillet as back-up but neither are natural full backs. If Vanden Borre gets ahead of Gillet at Anderlecht, he could leapfrog the same player in the national squad and take his place in the plane to Rio … assuming of course they qualify. So a Dutch coach in Belgium could have a big say in who Wilmots sends off to the country’s first World Cup finals appearance since 2002.

I hope Vanden Borre returns to form as most pundits see Belgium’s weakness in the right back position as an Achilles heel
    How about Boyata ?
or Luis Pedro Cavanda if he becomes a naturalized Belgian
