Poor performances in Europe but hope springs eternal

Last Thursday was a disappointing night for Belgian clubs in the Europa League last 32. Anderlecht went to AZ Alkmaar and were totally outplayed. The result though was only a 1-0 defeat which does give them some hope in Brussels on Thursday. Standard Liege were in Krakow and despite playing against 10 men for most of the game, they could only manage a 1-1 draw. Finally Club Brugge started brightly against Hannover and took the lead. It didn’t last though, and the Germans overran them in the last 25 minutes and could have had three or four: final result, 2-1.

The Derniere Heure listed the odds of the three teams going through, based on previous results in European games, and they are:

Anderlecht 41.9% chance of going through; Club Brugge 51.6% and Standard 76.3%. If the two latter clubs do make it to the last 16, they will play each other. All three return games are next Thursday night.
