Standard end season with cup final victory

By | May 22, 2011

Standard Liege defeated Westerlo 2-0 to win the Belgian Cup for the first time in 18 years. Goals from Mangala and Mravac (own goal) ended Westerlo’s dream. Jan Ceulemans’ team played their part in an entertaining match but they probably lacked belief. For Standard, Mangala was solid in defence and his goal put Standard on the route to victory. Jelle Van Damme was a consistent threat on the left and Meme Tchite worked tirelessly. Sinan Bolat in goal was also a tower of strength. The focus for several players will now be on Belgium’s game with Turkey, for others it could be their next transfer.
